Tacos on the Quad

Kick Off Hispanic Heritage Month with tacos on the quad. Come enjoy free food and Latin music. Students, faculty, and staff are welcomed.

Restrictions

  • Everyone is required to wear a mask and maintain proper social distancing.
  • Do not remove your mask unless you are at your table drinking or eating.
  • Hand-sanitizer will be provided.
  • Tacos will be served in to-go boxes to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • Limited number event / wristband required

Coffee Break

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, ISO and International House & Programs will host a Coffee Break event where all JSU students, staff, and faculty can come and taste authentic Hispanic regional coffees and Hispanic desserts like pastries and hot chocolate.

  • Everyone is required to wear a mask and maintain proper social distancing.
  • Do not remove your mask unless you are at your table drinking or eating.
  • The servers should wear gloves and masks while serving.
  • In the case of inclement weather this event will be postponed-TBA

Tacos, Tamales, and Tortas- Oh, My: Latin American Food and Culture in the United States

Virtual Event on Microsoft Teams (Join the Presentation)

Learn about the history of some commonly consumed Latin American foods and the cultural impact that people of Latin American descent have had on the United States. A presentation and panel hosted by Dr. Lance Ingwersen (Asst. Professor of History), with a Q&A session with the audience to follow. Raffle prizes will be offered at the end of the presentation. 


Latin Trivia Night

Virtual Event on Microsoft Teams (Join the Presentation)

Latin Trivia Night will be hosted by El Latido, a new organization on campus. Trivia questions will feature Hispanic/Latino culture. Questions will be displayed through Kahoot, test your knowledge with this fun Latin Trivia Night. The top winners will be given a prize!

Movie Night: "Like Water for Chocolate"

Come watch "Like Water for Chocolate". This movie creates its own intense world of passion and romance and adds a little comedy and a lot of quail, garlic, honey, chiles, mole, cilantro, rose petals and corn meal. It takes place in a Mexican border town, circa 1910, where a young couple named Tita and Pedro are deeply in love. But they are never to marry. Mama Elena, Tita's fearsome mother, forbids it. She sees the duty of her youngest daughter to stay always at home and take care of her. Tita is heartbroken - especially when Pedro marries Rosaura, her oldest sister."

  • This movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. Please make proper accommodations.

Latin Ensemble Concert

This month-long celebration will conclude with the performance of the JSU Latin Ensemble. Our special guests and alumni for the night will be Aurelia Ugarte, owner of Heirloom Taco, and Amado Ortiz, owner of Red Threads. Join us by ending this month-long celebration with music and desserts. Door prizes will be announced during the program. Students, faculty, staff and alumni are welcomed.
