Faster Master's

"I can’t say enough good things about this program! I'm able to get a headstart on my educational goals because I can work on two degrees at the same time. When I graduate with my bachelor's, I’ll be halfway done with my master's. I encourage everyone to become a part of this amazing program!"

Benefits of the Faster Master’s Program

The JSU Faster Master’s program allows exceptional undergraduate students to take up to 12 hours of graduate coursework during the junior and senior years, which double count toward both the bachelor’s and the master’s degrees.

  • Students only pay undergraduate tuition and fees on the double-counted hours, saving up to $6,000 on a graduate degree.
  • Students can use undergraduate scholarships and financial aid toward these double-counted hours.
  • Students can graduate with a master’s degree up to a full year earlier than through a traditional master’s program.
  • Students in the program receive priority registration to ensure they are able to register early for the classes they need.
  • Students in the JSU Honors Program may also count their Faster Master's graduate classes as Honors classes with approval from the Honors Program.
  • Students can leave college with a master’s degree, rather than just an undergraduate degree, making themselves more marketable and increasing their earning potential.

Apply to the Faster Master's Program

Students may apply to the JSU Faster Master’s program during the second semester of their sophomore year, and accepted students may begin taking classes in the program during their junior year.

Transfer students must successfully complete one semester at JSU before taking graduate classes in the Faster Master's program.

To apply, simply fill out the JSU Graduate Application for Admission and select the Faster Master’s option when prompted to do so in the application.

For more information about the JSU Faster Master’s program, please contact the Office of Graduate Studies at graduate@jsu.edu or (256) 782-5348.

Faster Master's Requirements & Details

Students must start the master's degree within one year of graduating with their undergraduate degree.

Students have six (6) years in which to complete their master's degree, starting with enrollment in the first double-count class.

Students must make an A or a B in the graduate classes in order for them to double count. If a student makes a C in a graduate class, it will only count toward the undergraduate degree. If a student makes a C in a graduate class that is required for the master's degree (not an elective), the student must retake the course once he or she graduates and begins the master's degree as a graduate student.

Students in the program must maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA to continue taking graduate classes.

Students in this program are not eligible for Graduate Assistantships or graduate-level scholarships or fellowships until they graduate with the undergraduate degree and enroll in the graduate program classified as graduate students.

Only graduate courses taken at JSU and approved by the undergraduate and graduate major advisors may be eligible for double counting toward both degrees.

Double-counted courses taken as part of this program will only transfer out of JSU as undergraduate courses.
